Gabe James is a singer/songwriter, 20 living in LA. I interviewed him on being an artist during this pandemic.

Hello Gabe, thank you for doing this. So first, tell me a bit about yourself and how you got into music.
My name is Gabe, I am from a little town in Colorado. I got into singing around the end of middle school, going into high school. I always had a subconscious love for music but I started listening to loads of artists and loved it. I used to go on long walks and sing because I was too scared to perform in front of anyone. Then I went onto write songs and it was really therapeutic for me.
How do you think covid has affected the start of your career?
I haven't known too different. I was always dreaming of the day prior to covid to see a whole team helping me out and to start to play small shows but with covid, it creates closed doors. You just put your song out and you're still sitting in your bedroom doing the same thing.
How was the process of producing your songs so far during this time?
It was really unprohibiting and pretty pleasant. I had two in person sessions before covid hit with my producer Matteus who produced the whole project. We had lots of online zoom sessions throughout last summer and used this program where you can stream really high-quality audio. So, I could hear what he was doing very well. I feel like we captured the same things we were meant to capture.
How was the process of filming the music videos?
It was fine actually. I was more nervous because it was my first music videos. For the 'Julia' music video, I took inspiration from the Gracie Abrams music video,'I miss you, I'm sorry'. I shot it in my bedroom all by myself, off my computer camera. It turned out really cool and I guess that was a very covid vibe video.
What is one thing you would love to do as a musician in the future?
I want to be able to go to shows, I want to be able to perform. A big thing that a lot of artists might be struggling with is that I get a ton of inspiration from watching other artists play live. So over the course of this pandemic, it has been a lot of me re-imagining this feeling of being at a concert and wanting to do that. It is where a lot if it comes from, it's the biggest artist high to connect live with fans and play shows.
